about us — West German Shepherds (1)

Located in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina;our breeding program was founded in 2004, but our history goes much deeper.Twenty five years ago Sam (short for Samantha)a lanky, georgous black and tan female German Shepherd came into our lives. New to the breed,I was perplexed to later discover she was a Czechoslovakian or Czech type German Shepherd.Always by my side or on my heels, she taught me how inseparable German Shepherds are from master. She;fearless and intelligent, quickly enveloping every facet of life with love, loyalty, curiosity, and protection. One day while changing a flat Sam inserted herself between us, she perceived close bond between father & son and had to be part of the action. Instantly Dad complemented her special intelligence, her charming appeal;now he was hooked too. In 2004 my father acquired a pair to start our breeding program, we worked in tandem. More years elapsed then we gave my oldest son his first German Shepherd. One family completely immersed in this most noble of all canine breeds -THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG.

Sam (Samantha)

Sam,fearless, yet gentle, always the alpha dog; she battled a copperhead snake, knocked off a terrorist raccoon and taught herself to catch ever speedy tree rodents -squirrels - all in the name of safety. In her mind these invaders represented a threat to her beloved master and home. She;calm, poised, always ready to take on any threat regardless of nature. On the gentle side, she was great with neighborhood kids and when the little girls shrieked loudly, Sam would scramble out like a squadron of F-14's to investigate and ensure their safety.Lightning quick at retrieves, super strong work drive, great overall proportions, nerves of steel, she was the perfect representation of a Czech Shepherd.

Sam begins training Sheba

Never bred, never a birth mother; Sam adopted Sheba at first sight to become a surrogate mom. Sam began to train Sheba right away:no strangers allowed, master drives a blue truck, we meet him at the back gate. During summer heat mom with surrogate daughter / trainee close by would sit on cool concrete or scratch out a spot in the deep shade, ears alert - eyes always on the back gate. Sam would send younger, more energetic Sheba out to investigate small matters,if a threat deemed worthy then Sam marched out herself to mete out her own brand of justice. Ignore her bark at your own peril. Today at departure time every puppy gets a long, last goodbye hug and hears these same words of encouragement - Be smart, Be brave, make daddy proud - Go...be like Sam! May you rest in peace Sammy Girl.... you were this mans' best friend! Here on these pages is the legacy you helped to create...

Sheba

Sheba, a black and tan Czech Shepherd was the sweetheart of the kennel. Known for an excellent temperament, she gave a thunderous rolling bark- growl-bark for all visitors; then after checking my reaction she would begin a steady wag that radiated from tail to relaxed ears and a smile on her face. Very strong prey drive, excellent proportions, laser focused but no off switch.Sheba earned her stripes and eagerly took on the alpha role after Sam passed away. Sheba passed in 2017, she lived just 5 days shy of her 12th birthday and when she left us she took a huge chunk of our hearts with her. May the sun always shine warmly on you,my sweet Pup-Pup!

Brownie

A brown sable Czechoslovakian Shepherd, Brownie Girl experienced 2 older, more dominant females as role models, she had a whimsical and care-free attitude. During training always a maniac at ball retrieves, powerful hindquarters &excellent chest proportions, built for speed and cornering. She mastered the nuances of every type of radical bouncing Kong throw toy and could jump hurdles while sleeping.Brownie earned alpha status the hard way,law of the jungle - only the toughest survive. Now retired from breeding she ignores the youngsters who challenge her authority but still enforces if/when required. Today focused on kennel security she takes an active role as surrogate mom, babysitter and play friend for younger more energetic pups belonging to the other dams.
