Jim Schlossnagle will reportedly be the new baseball coach at Texas.

After three seasons as Texas A&M’s head coach, Schlossnagle is on the move from College Station to Austin. Longhorn insider Chip Brown of 247Sports was the first to report the move. National college baseball insider Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball is also reporting Schlossnagle to Texas.

— Kendall Rogers (@KendallRogers) June 25, 2024

Texas A&M was 135-62 in 3 seasons under Schlossnagle, making the College World Series in 2022 and ’24. Schlossnagle previously coached at TCU (734-343, 2004-21) and UNLV (77-47, 2002-03).

Texas brings in Schlossnagle after announcing the firing of David Pierce on Monday.

Schlossnagle blasted for postgame comments

Schlossnagle-to-Texas had plenty of chatter in the rumor mill before the Longhorn job was officially open. When Pierce was let go, Schlossnagle was widely mentioned as a top candidate.

After Texas A&M fell to Tennessee in Monday’s decisive Game 3 of the College World Series finals, Richard Zane of TexAgs asked Schlossnagle about being rumored for another job without specifically mentioning Texas. The coach had a fiesty response that has aged quite poorly in less than 24 hours.

“I think it’s pretty selfish of you to ask me that question, to be honest with you. But I left my family to be the coach at Texas A&M. I took the job at Texas A&M to never take another job again. And that hasn’t changed in my mind.

“That’s unfair to talk about something like that. That would be like you asking (Braden) Montgomery if he’s going to sign in the draft. But I understand you’ve got to ask the question. But I gave up a big part of my life to come take this job. And I poured every ounce of my soul in this job and I gave this job every ounce I could possibly give it. Write that.”

As one might expect, Schlossnagle is taking a lot of heat on social media for taking the Texas job so soon after his postgame comments.

After his postgame performance in which he berated a reporter for asking him a question that had to be asked, if Jim Schlossnagle leaves the Aggies for the Longhorns, he’ll have no credibility for the rest of his career and will be branded as a liar by many.

Jim Schlossnagle leaving Texas A&M to become the Head Coach of the Texas Longhorns less than 24 hours after losing the College World Series is an all-time villain move.

I respect the hell out of a guy embracing the villain role. College baseball NEEDED a villain. I love this

Texas A&M head coach Jim Schlossnagle:

• Takes another job. Not just any job.

• The Texas job. https://t.co/CogbG8pYC9

As if the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry needed any more spice. The Longhorns and Aggies are set to be permanent opponents in the 16-team league, beginning in the 2025 season.

    Typical coach.

” I took the job at Texas A&M to never take a job again, and that has not changed in my mind. ”

I am never leaving (unless I can get more money).

My wife might leave me for Tony Vitello, but Schlossnagle is never leaving ATM. Oh wait.

I didn’t think I could appreciate that national championship more. But yes. Yes I can.

Because how awful would it feel to lose to this guy and then watch him bolt like that?

We Vol fans feel your pain, Aggies. Lane Kiffin 2.0. You guys deserved better. Time to send all our bad boys of college baseball black hats to the other UT.

And seriously; my condolences to the Aggies everywhere. We Volunteers are all too well acquainted with coaches bolting like that.

Bad enough to lose the national championship in a close series. But to be kicked in the junk on the way out!? Inexcusable.

Well, he really pulled off a great snow job on a pretty dang good fan base that would have done just about anything for him. I’m sick of this whole rotten mess that college athletics has become. Checking out of this for a while.

I hate this for A&M fans. This is a bad loss to their program a day after a really hard loss to my Vols.

I have to admit though that I’m relieved. Tony V had to be on the short list for Texas.

He might have been on their list, but there was NO way Tennessee would let him leave.

Randy Boyd and Danny White aren’t letting him go, especially not to the fake UT!

The easy way to differentiate between the to schools is UT for the one in Tennessee and t.u. for the one in Austin.

It’ll agitate the hell out of them.

He’s going to the fake UT so Vols fans can join A&M fans in hating on him!

Seriously, could he not have taken a couple of days or so before announcing it. Did he not consider his players feeling at all?

Article would be more useful if it mentioned that Texas A.D. and Schlossnagel worked very well at TCU for nine years. That fact doesn’t have an automatic meaning: it might justify, or it might make it worse, or whatever – that can be argued and speculated forever. But, unquestionably, when the two key participants worked in the same roles closely and successfully for ten years, it is at least a part of the description of the occurrence. This is more about Del Conte – Schlossnagel than about Texas – Texas A&M; think about any two people who worked so closely for a decade that you’ve ever known. Would nine years of close work be irrelevant to whether they again work interdependently in key leader roles, in the ‘career cap’ job for each?

Still is just horrible timing in the announcement.

Sorry, you can dress it up any way you like, but the timing is bad on their part. But even worse, he should not have answered the question in the manner he did in the presser. He could have handled it with class. He didn’t. Just a neutral observation.

I have no problem with coaches leaving for a better job/pay whatever. He made himself out to be a complete clown by so vehemently denying the potential move. He could have just said “we just lost a close game for a natty and I want to concentrate on that and the team”. He did an excellent job looking foolish. You also have to wonder how his team took it after that little faux pas.

If I’m a potential recruit, I ignore all offers from this man. No words can express how A&M players feel. You lose a national title and the HC in less than 24 hours. Who leaves a runner-up team 3 years after becoming their HC? Three years or less at Texas, than he’ll be off to Baylor.

There is but one sin in the SEC and that is betrayal of the worst kind. Look out Texas. The entire SEC will be waiting next season to welcome you. LSU, TN, Vandy, UK, UGA, UF and certainly A&M. No mercy. lol.

I agree SEC baseball will be hard for Texas until Texas rebuilds, especially pitching. Other programs have MLB-quality starters for about half the conference games, and Texas (at this moment) is nowhere near matching up.

Three years of losing seasons and then banished to Waco? We’ll see. SEC baseball is terrific, and SEC pitching is far above any other conference.

The SEC will test Texas in every sport. Three of the last four NCAA Director’s Cups are in Austin, and Del Conte has been a phenomenal A.D. thus far. I am so looking forward to the coming years, because it will be so difficult. Texas’ standards and expectations will be just as high as always.

Well said. There are many programs in the SEC that just haven’t really played Texas in many sports. TN has only played Texas 3 times in football, all in Cotton bowls and never a game outside of that. New money is always good for the conference as well. The SEC just makes you better in sports, size, venue etc. You’ll have a lot of SEC fans from other teams at your home games.

An upside also is, it’s another place for SEC fans to go, visit your cities. I know little of Austin and only been through there in passing a few times, same with Norman, OK. We know Texas and OU are quality programs and schools, so Texas and OU made sense why they were at the top of the list if not top 4 preferred by the SEC and fans to come in.

Nah, never said he’d have losing seasons at Texas, than off to Austin. He didn’t have losing seasons at A&M. Tony Vitello didn’t even get back to Omaha 2 times in his first three seasons at TN. We know he’ll be good in Texas but man, I wish he would have just avoided the question in the post game the other day.. lol But that is part of baseball. Coaching is fickle nowadays.

In all fairness, leaving his family for the A&M job wasn’t terribly difficult after he’d had the bitter public divorce after cheating on his wife. He was truthful about that.

I was wondering about his comment about leaving his family. If he had a great relationship with his family and left them for a coaching job then he what does that say about his character. Instead he cheated on his wife and then made it sound like he made a great sacrifice by leaving his family to coach at A&M.

Did Schloss even tell A&M he was talking to Texas? It doesn’t sound like it. This seems shady to me, and it portrays him as less than honorable. Whatever, he is THE worst judge of what the optics of a situation will be of any coach ever. No, wait, there is still Lane (I was born on third base) Kiffin.

Doubtful that he said anything to anybody. But the timing of when they fired Pierce makes me think this has been in the works for a while. Schlossnagle knows baseball, but it turns out he doesn’t know Aggies at all. This won’t be forgotten. However, it’s a good lesson for our SEC brethren. Get ready boys. This is u.t. in a nutshell. This is what you’ve invited in.

I admit, I didn’t know much about Schloss before he came to A&M. I also thought the guy was much older, turns out he’s only 53. Looks early 70’s to me with an unusually large head for his body lol. He can coach but the people skills. A&M fans deserved better by this guy. At least some truth face honesty. A&M’s fans were classy and supportive of their team in Omaha and it’s the players that has made all the positive change and hard work for the team. We won’t be in the SEC with Texas, they are going to be stuck in here with all of us.. LOL

Nature of the beast, with regard to the majority of the coaches.
