Luka Mijatovic's 200 IM Breakthrough: 1:44.28 at 16 Years Old (2025)

Hold onto your swim caps, because Luka Mijatovic is making waves in the swimming world! This 16-year-old phenom just shattered his personal best in the 200 IM with a stunning 1:44.28, proving he's not just a middle-distance freestyle specialist. But here's where it gets even more exciting: this time puts him 9th all-time in the 15-16 age group, edging out his teammate and training partner, Tim Wu.

At the 2025 Pleasanton Seahawks SC Senior 2 meet (November 7th-9th, Pleasanton, CA, SCY), Mijatovic didn't stop there. He also clocked a new lifetime best in the 100 fly prelims (47.54), placing him 52nd all-time in his age group. And this is the part most people miss: he’s been consistently improving in events outside his comfort zone, hinting at a potential shift in focus.

Could we see Mijatovic dominate the IM events when he joins the University of Texas in 2027, training under the legendary Bob Bowman? It’s a question that’s sparking debates among swimming enthusiasts. Bowman, known as the best men’s IM coach in history, could unlock Mijatovic’s full potential in these events. But will they take that route, or will Mijatovic stick to his freestyle roots? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Mijatovic’s versatility was on full display as he also won the 200 free in 1:34.74, just shy of his personal best. He’s scheduled to swim the 500 free, 200 fly, 100 free, and 100 back on Sunday, though he’ll likely scratch at least one race to focus on his strengths.

Mijatovic wasn’t the only star shining in Pleasanton. 15-year-old Daniela Linares Danzos stole the show with a jaw-dropping 1:54.32 in the 200 backstroke, making her the fastest in her age group this season by over two seconds. She also clocked a best time in the 200 IM prelims (2:04.23) and won the 100 fly in 55.09, proving she’s a force to be reckoned with.

Maddie Thornton, a Georgia commit from Bend Swim Club, also impressed with a 2nd-place finish in the 200 back (1:54.92), a new personal best. She added a 2nd place in the 50 free (23.13) and a win in the 200 free (1:48.80), showcasing her all-around talent.

Other standout performances included Tim Wu, a Cal commit, who won the 200 back in a lifetime best of 1:42.55, and Jordan Ragland, another Cal commit, who took the boys’ 50 free in 20.02.

As the swimming world watches Mijatovic and his peers, one thing is clear: the future of the sport is in incredibly capable hands. But the real question remains: will Mijatovic become the next IM superstar, or will he continue to dominate freestyle? Share your predictions below—we’d love to hear your take!
