NFL Legend's Public Appeal for a Kidney Donor: 'I Thought I'd Have More Time'

Former New York Jets center Nick Mangold has launched a public appeal, asking fans to consider donating a kidney. The 41-year-old, a legendary figure in the NFL, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, revealing a private battle with a serious health condition since 2006. Nick's revelation comes as he faces the need for a life-saving kidney transplant due to a genetic defect leading to chronic kidney disease.

In his message, Nick expressed his openness about his health struggles, stating, 'In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease. After a challenging summer, I'm undergoing dialysis while awaiting a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I'd have more time.'

He further explained his decision to reach out to the public, mentioning, 'I don't have any family members who can donate at the moment, so I'm turning to you, our NY Jets and Ohio State communities. I need a kidney donor with type O blood.' Nick provided specific instructions for those with type O blood to register as potential donors through Columbia University's Irving Medical Center, using his full name, Nicholas Mangold, and birthday, January 13, 1984.

Nick expressed his gratitude, saying, 'I am deeply grateful to anyone who considers donating. My family has been my unwavering support throughout this journey. This experience has made me realize how fortunate I am to have such an incredible family, friends, and community behind me. Despite the challenges, I'm maintaining a positive outlook and focusing on the path ahead.' He concluded with a hopeful message, 'I'm eagerly anticipating better days and a return to full strength soon.'

The response to Nick's plea has been overwhelming, with many followers offering their support. One fan commented, 'I just signed up. Ready to help if approved. Type O, lifelong Jets supporter here!' Another replied, 'Applied! Type O+ Buckeyes fan. Sending my best wishes your way.' A third added, 'I submitted my information. Anything for the best center of all time.'

Nick's career with the Jets was remarkable, spanning 11 seasons after being drafted in 2006. He played in 171 games, earning seven Pro Bowl appearances and twice being named a first-team All-Pro. His contributions to the franchise have earned him a place in the Jets' Ring of Honour in 2022. Nick's retirement in 2016 marked the end of a successful NFL career, leaving a lasting impact on the sport.
