Solving EV charging tax challenges: How to manage taxation across multiple markets (2024)

Handling taxes in your EV charging business might not sound as exciting as new technologies like V2G, but it’s just as foundational as OCPP.

Most business owners of large-scale EV charging networks prefer to steer clear of taxation topics, expecting their CPMS providers or accounting software to cover these aspects. This blog post is for companies’ financial and legal experts who cannot avoid this issue and must solve numerous taxation challenges and specific use cases that arise as the business expands across different markets.

AMPECO’s built-in functionality simplifies managing taxes, allowing you to focus on growing your business instead of navigating complex regional tax laws.

The AMPECO solution

Our goal at AMPECO is to provide you with exceptional flexibility to handle multiple use cases across different jurisdictions. We achieve this by allowing you to apply different sales tax rates to individual tariff components. In most EV charging management platforms, the tax is levied on the entire session amount. At AMPECO, for instance, the energy consumed for charging can be taxed at one rate, while the idle fee, treated as a parking service, can be taxed separately.

Key features

Different sales taxes for each location: You can set specific tax rates for each location you operate in. For example, if you have chargers in several countries or regions, you can apply different tax rates for each area, ensuring compliance with local tax regulations.

Tax exceptions by state, region, or zip code: You can establish tax exceptions for specific areas. For instance, border regions, such as northern Italy or northern Austria, often have different sales tax rates compared to the rest of the country. This approach accommodates the unique tax rules for residents and workers in these regions.

Tax rules per operator: AMPECO enables clients to establish multiple operator entities, each representing a different legal entity managing operations in specific countries. This setup allows each entity to have its own set of tax rules, providing flexibility and precision in tax management.

Seamless integration with accounting software: Our platform supports “tax codes” and “tax category” fields, which can be mapped to those used by the operator which makes it easy to integrate with external accounting software, ensuring that tax data exports are accurate and compatible.

Detailed session receipts: Each AMPECO receipt offers a clear breakdown of the tariff components and the taxes applied to each, ensuring transparency and better understanding.

B2B partner invoicing: An operator’s B2B partners can issue receipts and invoices under their name, applying the same tax rules as the operator. This feature can be advantageous when negotiating with key locations or clients. Although different tax rules for B2B clients in different jurisdictions are not currently supported, this feature will be available soon.

How it works

The AMPECO backend features a dedicated menu for managing all tax rules per operator. You can choose between two tax modes: the “Generic Mode,” where prices already include taxes and are integrated into the advertised prices, and the “US Tax Mode,” where prices are entered without tax and taxes are added separately.

You can set a default tax rule to apply a single rate to all service types for straightforward tax applications. For more detailed control, you can assign tax rules to specific service types (such as energy, duration fees, and idle fees), allowing different tax codes, categories, and rates for each.

Additionally, tax exceptions can be specified for particular states, regions, or zip codes to accommodate unique local tax regulations. These features simplify the complexities of handling taxes in EV charging and ensure accurate and compliant tax management across various jurisdictions.

The benefits of advanced taxation management for CPOs

AMPECO’s built-in taxation functionality offers granular control over each tariff element comprising the total session amount. This enables you to accommodate complex use cases driven by local jurisdictions or country-specific requirements. Such detailed control ensures that each service aspect is taxed accurately, reflecting the true cost and compliance needs.

Operators can have peace of mind knowing that the critical issue of taxation is managed effortlessly through AMPECO’s built-in CPMS functionality. The system’s reliability extends to all European countries, the US, and other regions worldwide, making it a comprehensive solution for global operations.
