Looking forward to seeing how this turns out!

Here it is. :) I'm really happy with how it turned out. There are some places I'd like to take another shot at, mostly in corners like the ones I showed in the shifter surround on the prior page.

It looks a different color from one part to the next, but that's just the lighting:

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5581/15142901215_54245e6290_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/p58jXH)Console finished. (https://flic.kr/p/p58jXH) by krshultz (https://www.flickr.com/people/66718543@N06/), on Flickr

This shows it looking a bit more consistent:

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3865/15139930301_f402810289_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/p4S6P4)Console finished. (https://flic.kr/p/p4S6P4) by krshultz (https://www.flickr.com/people/66718543@N06/), on Flickr

Here's one of the corners I'd like to have another crack at. This was down all the way last night when I finished the project, but I guess I didn't push it down firmly enough. Apparently this adhesive responds to pressure by design, and in little corners like this, that's hard to do without marring up the film:

I'm really happy with it, it came out even better than I'd hoped.

I missed something:

I had been contemplating pulling out all kinds of trim and painting it, but the wrap is a way better idea! Ive been thinking about wrapping everything in a red as similar to my body paint as possible. After I see how it looks I will figure out if that was a good idea or not, but with your idea, Karl, I can reverse it!

Wow, my lighter comes out when I attempt to get my USB charger out of it. :/ Your project is inspiring me... I've been wanting my bezels to color match the exterior.

I bought mine through Amazon, and the seller was Metro Restyling. Their own website seems to have all the colors of 3M 1080 film, or certainly most of them. And there's a bunch of colors (http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/mediawebserver?mwsId=PPPPPr6wH0cpiuqRl7xsi7qbbs6nb 06wEsQPbsQPbPPPPPP--), not just metals and carbon fiber look.

Very easy stuff to work with as these things go. I struggled putting Lamin-X on my headlights, but this stuff was way easier.

Pro Tip: Do some testing first. I didn't want to cut out a big piece for the whole bezel, only to ruin it trying to get it to fit around an odd shape like cutout for the lighter. I cut out a little 3" x 3" or so square, and made sure I could make that look nice before doing it for real.

W124_Karl - Great job, you should be happy with how it looks. Not to get greedy, but are you planning on wrapping anything else in the interior?

Based on your experience how hard do you think it would be to do the vent rings?

Thanks for sharing!

I love messing with my neighbors and delivery people. One week it's 4 tires on wheels; another it's a subframe.

Also got some Rust Bullet paint and metal blast prep spray. I power-washed my trunk a few days ago and plan to go over everything again with a basic solution to neutralize any ammonium phosphate/sulfate left over from the fire. After that, the trunk gets encapsulated.

Maybe I should have made my own thread about this. I'd be happy to if people think it would be useful.

I've thought about maybe doing the plastic cup/frame things behind the door handles, but I doubt I will. I think it'll look out of place. It would also be a pretty difficult piece to get right, with the entire thing being one concave surface. But I did a test run on a leftover S2000 door handle cup/frame thing, and it seemed doable. I'd be happy to hear suggestions for other stuff to try.

On the vent rings - I've actually thought about that. Will the stock vent rings come free of the vent assembly once the vents are out of the dash? If they will, then I don't see why that wouldn't work. Might need to do a couple of test runs to get the technique down, but I've still got like 3.5' of material left. :) I'm thinking a square piece just larger than the entire diameter of the rings. Stretch it to fit, so the brush marks are all going the same way, and then just cut out the center and the edges.

If they don't come free of the assembly, I don't know how you'd do it. You have to tuck the end of the wrap behind something, and the only place for it to go would be between the eyeball and the socket, so to speak. That's a small enough gap that I don't think you could get it in there without messing up the film. And even if you could, when the eyeballs inevitably drooped down like they all do, you'd see the end of the film. It'd look untidy.

I tried getting the passenger side vent out of the car to play around with it, but I struggled, didn't want to break anything, and gave up. There are a ton of threads here and elsewhere describing how to get them out, but they all describe different methods. And all of them say "this is the best way!!" For someone like me who is new to the car, it's kind of puzzling to figure out stuff like that.

This is probably a downside of using the wrap. If you want, say, a shift knob, or some vent rings, to match it perfectly, you're probably out of luck with the brushed titanium color like I used. The other colors might be easier to match.

Yes, the vent rings will come free of the assembly when they are removed from the vent holes.

I've had good luck using the credit card (or any plastic card) method to get the eyeball vents out. Just jam the card in on the left or right side until you hear a click, then slide it around to the other side while pulling gently on the vent.

Been a project for the week off and on but I got a new 37mm koyo in plus 6 of the 8 coolant hoses replaced. Also changed tranny and diff fluid plus rebuilt the shifter with the kit from moss. Also had a new knob from moddiction and new boots for the shifter and ebrake from top gaiters on ebay.

Lots of swearing lots of sweat and lots of blood = lots of smiles when its over.

Waiting on my COP kit from fab9 then I should be slowing down on projects for a bit.

I started on the vent ring project today, a followup to my center console bezel . shifter surround project from a couple pages back.

Based on your experience how hard do you think it would be to do the vent rings?

Not hard at all, it turns out.

Now getting the vent rings off the assembly, THAT was a pain in the arse. As was fiddling around with different materials trying to fix my droopy vent problem while I was at it. I thought my idea of some craft store suede was very clever, but it was too thick. The soft side of some heavy duty velcro worked fine. It isn't any thinner than the suede, but is a lot more compressible.

I've only gotten two finished. I did the first one twice, the first time as a test fit. The second one went much faster than the first, and I think it'll only take me a couple hours to do the last two. Counting coffee breaks and diaper changing breaks.

Here's a sneak peak at how one of the vents turned out. I'll probably just post a thread of my own over in the interiors section or some such place.

The credit card method worked great, thanks for that.

My contribution to the perpetual vent removal thing: I used a piece of electrical wire as a pull tool. I bent it 180* around, fished the bent end in, and then just pivoted the whole thing and pulled back out.

Installed some new audio gear to replace the stock stuff.. I'm not a big audiophile, so just a basic head unit and speaker upgrade.

I went with a JVC KD-X310BT digital media receiver and a set of Blaupunkt speakers. What a huge improvement over the stock gear and I love the Bluetooth connectivity.

Undid my rain rail and tried to repair it, but it's a goner, part of the hard plastic stayed on the studs when I took the rest off, it's cracked all over the place. About to order a new rail, it wasn't as hard to take off/put on as I thought it'd be, although working under the glass rear window midday was not the best idea.

Also learned how to properly jack up my new-to-me Miata (thanks to whomever put that PDF together!), and learned that my current jack is too big to use without also using the scissor jack.

Replaced motor/tranny/diff oil while I had the car in the air. Didn't warm it up first, hope that isn't too big a deal. Did turret and shift boots yesterday, along with sanding down the filler to tank inlet pipe, knocking off the rust and ridding myself of that pesky gas smell by allowing the filler hose to actually seal.

Surprisingly, I was able to get back in the car. I thought I'd have to call someone for sure. But I took a crank for a jack from a lexus, and put it in between the soft top and the window and unhooked the clamps for the soft top! Didn't know it was that easy. For anyone else whoever thought about a situation like this occuring, this could be a possible solution depending on what tools you have available.

That reminds me of my friend in DC who had an NA. He had to park it on the street and decided it was better to leave the car unlocked so that would-be thieves wouldn't cut the top to get in. He came out one morning and the top was cut anyway. They made off with some loose change...

Use the Spring fitting and it works great. To add footwell lighting, buy led strips from Walmart or an auto parts store so it matches the dome light. Once you have everything, replace the dome light just like you would a light bulb, and install the peel and stick lights somewhere under the dash (be sure to have the LEDs facing the right direction if they are cheap, one strip may appear lighter than the other after install). You can wire them anyway you like. I just wired them to the door switch. There are more details on other threads regarding this install. Quite easy, just tight working conditions(had to remove the seat to fit under the dash). well worth it in my opinion.

I'm sorry is this is considered thread jacking, or if I'm stepping on anybody's toes. Just trying to share information.

I shortened and soldered the wiring and adhered it dead center before replacing the cover. The wiring is locked in place by liquid electrical tape and the light adhesive itself so it shouldn't pull apart (the wires are *very* thin).

Well, it was really last Friday, we had our new Conti Extreme Contact DWS tires installed and RoadForce balanced. The ride is great and quiet, thanks Rudy.

We then continued on to the Finger Lakes region of New York and 3 days of watching SVRA racing at Watkins Glen. This year was a celebration of vintage (pre-war) MGs as well as the MGAs and MGBs most are familiar with. Great to see these cars racing in anger on the track their owners pushing them for all they could on the rolling track - ah, nostalgia.

By the time the weekend was over we had put over 600 miles on the new tires - I guess that breaks them in!

As a bonus we joined up with a number of our Sebring, FL friends who officiate most SVRA events, good talk, good food and good beer!

This is why i refuse to put an aftermarket stereo in my Miata. I don't want to do anything that would make me feel worried about leaving the car unlocked and top down. I'd rather not have someone take a knife to my convertible top just to steal out of the car. Jeep guys tend to do the same thing: leave it open and take everything with you.

As for what I did to my NB today, I emailed Robbins about the 1 month old top on my NB that leaks at the seams in the rain. I noticed that he seam across the back above the window didn't lay flat when I got it. Now I see that that seam sholud have been sealed down, but wasn't. I hope Robbins are not one of those companies that jumps through hoops to try to deny a warranty claim, especially since I didn't have it installed by a shop. The crappy thing is that even if they replace the top, I'll be out the money I spent to have the rear window tinted, not to mention all of the effort to install the first one, and now to replace it again. Oh well, hopefully they will come through for me.

Let's start by a balance rotation and alignment for the tires mid last week. And I found out the my drive belts were cracking. So I took Mimi into my shop and had a lot done while it was there.

Next steps I am planning on taking are:
New set of rims. Two of mine are warped. (Previous owner I believe)

And a new suspension package from flying miata with the Koni shocks FM springs MCU bumpstops and FM pair of swaybars.

She is riding so smooth and she is only going to get better.

I want to put an aftermarket stereo in mine but I'm looking at something CHEAP. All I really need is something with either and Aux jack or bluetooth, used on ebay they can be had for $50 or so. Perfect. If someone wants to go through all that effort to steal a $50 stereo, all the power to them and their pathetic lives.

Yeah... As much as I want Bluetooth in my new Miata... I do not want to give any reason to have the top cut... I leave it unlocked now and I would leave the top down on days that I had it down... Shoot... I am almost thinking of leaving little labels on the windows saying the door is unlocked... No need to break the glass or cut the top. I take a backpack with me to take all with me when I get out...

Then I think... who steals radios these days?!! Well A LOW DOWN DIRTY DOG THEIF... that's who... I guess I will find an fm turner... Been years since I used one and man... CD's?! What are does JK!

Detachable face plates are still a worthy deterrent from thieves, I think. I dunno, I had one car broken in to in my life and it was about 12 years ago. That car's stereo did not have a detachable face plate, however.

Not cheap but a retrosound radio is about 250 and looks vintage but has iphone and Bluetooth support. It has an understated look that won't draw the crackheads

Finally adapted the fiber board battery cover to my Optima.

http://forum.miata.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=199197&stc=1&d=1410303312

Also fixed my noisy blower motor. It was making a clicking sound when running that was NOT caused by leaves and/or debris. Rather, the source seemed to be the motor brushes, or something in their area.

Step 1: Remove blower motor.
Step 2: Remove metal ring on top of fin cylinder, and pry back the plastic clip on top.
Step 3: Remove blower fin cylinder. Pry slowly, and somewhat evenly. Just don't break the plastic. Mine wasn't brittle, but yours may be. Do NOT hammer axle (or anything else).
http://forum.miata.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=199198&stc=1&d=1410303312
Step 3 1/2: Continue removing blower fin cylinder. Use your fingers if they fit. There is one more plastic lip to get past.
http://forum.miata.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=199199&stc=1&d=1410303312
Step 4: Cut some thin rubber washers (apx 1mm thickness, no thicker) into small 1/4" squares.
Step 5: Stuff rubber material into the spot shown here, and the one just like it on the other side. Use a tiny flathead screwdriver or something similar. This puts constant pressure on these clips and keeps them (and other things, I assume) from rattling.
http://forum.miata.net/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=199200&stc=1&d=1410303312
Step 6: Replace fin cylinder and metal ring.
Step 7: Plug it back in!

Much less noise now and performance of the fan doesn't seem to be affected.

I know the feeling. I actually broke it more before I fixed it. That note about the hammer is from experience, lol.

Also, if the armature commutator doesn't have a uniform finish all the way around, you may want to find a small commutator stone or a similar abrasive media (1000 - 2000 fine grit sandpaper) to shine it up again instead of the above method. (New words to most, I know. Google is your friend :P)
Polishing up the commutator was the first thing I tried, but it didn't completely fix the sound.

The last time I installed an aftermarket stereo in a vehicle, it was an $80 head unit from Best Buy (regular price, not on sale) just so I could have an AUX jack and bluetooth. I figured "who would break into my truck for an $80 stereo?!?!" Well, 2 months later they did almost $1500 in damage to my Ram when they broke in for that $80 stereo. Lesson learned... never again will I put an aftermarket stereo in any vehicle. YMMV.

I paid about $530 labor to have my clutch replaced. Normally, that'd be considered too much but my powerplant frame bolts were legitimately seized and the job took a day and a half. My clutch wasn't bad, but there was some serious squealing when I depressed the clutch pedal "sometimes." I threw an Exedy KM203 OEM-style kit at the problem; good thing since my pilot bearing was TOAST (no rotation whatsoever).

On the plus side, my oils are all changed (engine, transmission, diff; they let me work on it while it was in the air) and my clutch pedal is 5 times lighter! I should look at adjusting it, but it functions perfectly so I'm not sure what's up with that. I'll bleed it again for good measure.

I love that I'm willing to do my own timing belt/water pump and suspension work, but not the clutch. Seems odd, but whatever. I have competition motor mounts in the mail so I can get that subframe on!

Today I realized that my clutch bite point is still the exact same. The pedal is firm too. It's just super-easy to push. My solution for now is just push in to that point instead of the floor; perfect 1-2 shifting without actually tweaking anything yet!

Everything I read online suggests rotating the pedal adjustment rod 2-3 turns down and then making sure free play exists but is minimal. This assumes that my bite point is wrong, though...which it isn't!

I'm sure I'm just fretting over how a car is supposed to work and feel since I've been so used to a mediocre (overly firm) pedal.

So I had never adjusted the parking brake at the lever and never knew what was "spec" for the number of clicks. I checked my Haynes and realized I had always had way too many clicks. Supposed to be 5-7. I was at 14... Yikes! Turned it back to 7 and now it feels nice and firm. I will be driving it later this evening to check if the calipers were adjusted appropriately when my mechanic replaced them both, checking for excessive heat from the rotor and any shudder while I drive.

Searched the forum for something I remembered seeing, but didn't find it.

The wife got a ticket the other day because the Highway Patrolman saw her pulling her seat belt on. What he didn't see was her being choked by it and having to take it off and re-pull it. He saw that it was grabbing prematurely and said if we got it fixed and took the paperwork from the repair to the DA, the charges might be dropped.

I thought I saw once on the forum about something you could get to extend the belts and make them more comfortable, but I couldn't. However, I saw where one could take the retracter and clean and lubricate it and the problem would be solved. I'm going to try it and let's hope it works, because I have to get a new cam position sensor, and I can't afford much else at the moment.

Long story but started off two and a half years ago with a 2001 and traded it last year for a 2010. Sold the 2010 in the spring for health reasons among other reasons deciding we were too old for another toy. Turned out we really missed having a Miata in the garage so last week found a deal on a 1999 with only 33K kilometers on it (approx. 20,000 miles). Sooo in keeping with the forum topic I changed the gear oil in the transmission today using Castrol Syntec and since it was already up on the ramps got out a can of black Tremclad paint and sprayed the rear suspension components.

First successful fitting. There's QuikSteel in the back for the screws to have something to 'bite' into. Notice the hardwired connection to the cig lighter. (If you're curious: Yes, that is a mini-usb plug, and yes, it is intended to carry 12v rather than 5v)

Fast forward to today I checked my battery well. Loads of white and green battery acid residue and underneath that was rust on the metal.

I cleaned up the battery acid powder and grinded out the rust behind it, wiped down the area and sprayed with anti-rust.

I have the dreaded "P0304-4th cylinder misfire" code. I called Tommy at Rosenthal and two new coil-over-plug units are on the way. I already had the new NGK wires and plugs waiting for the next change in 5K miles, so I guess I'll do it all while replacing the coils. I should have my parts Monday or Tuesday.

Has anyone figured out a good place to mount this? I was disappointed that who ever designed this plaque didn't think about how the size might relate to mounting spots. It's to tall to mount between the glove box and the dash.. I really can't find any spots that it will fit and look good.

Got the oil change done, switched from a PL14612 to a PL14610 filter to get a bit more oil capacity, put the new friction rings on. Bedded the new rings with a nice brisk drive with the top down and it was 102 outside! I missed driving my car lol, I was driving a 2014 subaru forester xt untill I could get my tire fixed, which was nice but not a miata. Worked long days so I couldn't get my tire fixed. But all is well now.

. . . changed . . . cam sensor. . . I'm curious about the reason you did this. I changed the cam shaft sensor on Mama's Miata when it had about 50,000 miles. But my reason was to correct a problem of the engine occasionally stalling while idling. Are these sensors supposed to be changed periodically as a maintenance task?

I keep all my car meet badges uninstalled, in a box, in a cabinet, in my living room. That way I get to keep them looking new and not have to pry them off some car when it gets sold, wrecked or stolen.

Ported the intake manifold a bit and cleaned the heck out of it. Boy was it dirty as all can be. As a note it seems runner #4 on lower half is smaller then the other 3 and has a sharp bend, I radiused it so it's a smooth transition. I have no idea if this will do anything. Having it soak in soapy water to get any oil I missed and clean the detergent off of it. Then I will be jb welding the butterfly thing to plug the holes. I used super clean degreaser, no damage to the aluminum noticed, of course I didn't soak it in that stuff for long (as soon as I sprayed it on it was working, as opposed to simple green which did nothing).

I left the intake ports close to the head a bit rough to promote good fuel/air atomization/swirl/whateveryoucallit.

It's basically a cooler with a marine bilge pump in the bottom. You fill it with ice and water, and the bilge pump circulates the water through the system. The two smaller (unused in this picture) fittings are for water, the two larger ones are for circuilating cold air.

The water lines attach to a coolshirt, which is basically a cotton garment with water lines stitched into it:
https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/Images/L/CS400.JPG

The air lines probably go to a marine blower and usually hook into the air port on a helmet:

It's pretty much a requirement for doing any racing during the summer out here. If you're willing to plunk down the cash, it's also a truly stupendous way to keep cool at a track day. I ran my setup last week when the ambient was ~101F in direct sunlight, and it probably kept me from getting heat stroke :P

Ouch, that's even worse than I thought... What all do you have to do to install it? Is there anything that can be done as a temporary seal?

Seashed

15th September 2014, 18:52

Yup, it hurts on a couple of levels! The install is a bit complicated, but not "horrible".
A couple of threads about doing that somewhere around here, but I don't have one saved.

You could try any number of DIY fix-its, using black RTV, make a little mould or frame out of "something". If I were to try that, I'd use clear plastic food wrap on the glass and rest of the door parts, and try to build up some of the RTV into position around the top of the glass, filling the vacant area as best as I could. Build up RTV to match the other side as closely as you could.
No guarantees any of that would work, but it would be cheaper and easier to do than the whole new seal. Not much to lose doing that, one tube of Permatex black RTV, what, $6?

Maybe somebody who has the OEM seal install instructions handy can jump in with those. Then you'll see what you're up against with that.

They won't work on any Miata unless you cut them. Cut it just rearward of the large groove and it will fit, and the clips in the dash will keep it in place.

It still seals very well without the inner flap. If you leave the wide groove intact the clips will hold it in place and allow it to spin (although it is a little tougher than the eyeballs)

Honestly, I tried desperately to get my engine bay spotless, and did ok, but it wasn't until I pulled the engine and really got in there with a pressure washer and simple green that it began to sparkle, now touching it up is easy...
I use simple green and a damp rag, never a hose.

I posted my question on another thread by accident and someone actually recommended hosing after using Simple Green. I've heard of guys doing this but I am not going to I don't think. I don't need electrical problems.

A hose won't hurt a cool engine. Just don't use high pressure and keep it off the cam cover (water in spark plug well, bad). I use simple green and scrub, followed by a light rinse.

Now what color to paint the intake manifold? Burnt copper like the valve cover or black, or have both the valve cover and intake mani powder coated flat olive green?

Well done Panchira! :-)

Question: what are the advantages of removing the vtcs? Also, what will you gain by blocking the egr valve? Will this cause any ecu problem?

Thanks

Had spare Reflectix leftover from insulating my garage door, so five minutes with a pair of scissors later: http://i.imgur.com/zFcAsIC.jpg

And the internet wanted $45 for a custom fitted one. HAH! I did it for about $5 worth of scrap that was already paid for from another project.

Not much from what I understand. But it still blocked the ports a bit. I also ported the intake as well. As for the egr, probably nothing, but I'm more doing it to keep the intake clean. It will throw a code if you don't trick the ecu.

I had the CEL code P0304 which led me to a burnt coil on #4 spark plug. I replaced both coils (thanks, Tommy of Rosenthal Mazda!), both spark plug wires (Blue NGK which installed perfectly after I "broke" the glue seal on the spark plug end, so that I could shove the end of the wire out for a good "click" on the spark plug before shoving down the boot which I had lubed with dielectric grease) and all four spark plugs (I switched back from the NGK Iridium to the NGK V-Power) and the engine seems to run better than ever (this may be my imagination). Anyway, the CEL went out when I started the engine and life is good! :jump:

What did I do yesterday, lastnight, and this morning in my NB?

Cursed, screamed and shouted! Maybe not that dramatic or exaggerated, but on the lines...

:)So I received my AuxMod and other accessories to have a stock radio and aux in... I started at 6 and what should have been an hour lasted way too long... I could not get the radio out for nothing... I mean I did not have the DIN tools, but a clothes hanger or screwdriver has always worked for me... So I left bought a set of tools and borrowed another set from a friend... Also bought a set of floormats and a sandwhich  Finally returned home and had dinner.

I then assumed:bang: I would have a cakewalk with the right tools... Wrong. :( I eventually forced the radio out after seeing what the over all problem was. The lock hinge/arms were bowed out to the extreme... The din and other tools going under the arms rather than on top... Well, with that done I installed the aux mod and ran the line under the center console. Cleaned up and closed all up... Turn car on... Nothing from the radio... I did a few test... Nothing... Checked fuses, all good. Reconnected the battery a few times... still dead... :dunno: Finally I uninstalled the AuxMod and the radio is DEAD!

I am not sure what happed... But now I need a new radio... I wanted stock only, but I think I will put an aftermarket radio in... I know I am baiting a thief with that :ohno:.

Not only this... the good from it all is that I noticed a hole in the shift boot... I have read on the forms to replace this as this could be the culprit in shift hesitations and such.

I will check the garage for the kit to use to replace the boot... but if someone knows off the top of their head please chime in. If someone wants my AuxMod in the bay area, let me know... It may be faster to sell it at a discount than return it... A stock radio to replace mine is like $200... Not going to happen... At least I don't think so...

The car is still sitting some guts out on the operating ground awaiting the transplant...

I added a bunch of bubble packing material to the trunk cubby holes on each side behind the removable trunk wall lining. I can really hear a noticeable decrease in noise going over bumps now. Big improvement.

Anyone know where to get the panel push pins? I bought some from Ebay awhile ago, but they are too big. These look to be about 1/8" holes?

Pixs? I'm Curious to try it out on my own too

Panel push pins, like everythings else Miata, are available from Rosenthal Mazda. Call Tommy and describe what you need. He will fix you up. He has never let me down and I've never had to wait more than three days for parts.

I popped out the eyeballs in the center and removed the sticky tape that the previous owner had attempted to use to perk them up. The tape failed and was looking rather distasteful as it protruded out from the vents, like little eyelashes.
I used the credit card method and worked great. I then popped the vents in the oven at 150° for about 10 minutes to get them warm to facilitate removing the vent from the socket.... worked great. Added the small felt pads and re-installed. Looks much better.

Also... those black panel push pins that seem to only be a dealer option... in the Lowe's...here in TX anyways, in the hardware section they have a special automotive bin and I've been able to find pins to use in my Lexus. You might find some the right size there also.
Have a great weekend all.

They are Enkei's. I always thought they were aftermarket but I found out on the forums that the Miatas came with them from the factory. My 04 is a base model and I got it used so I don't know if these were a available as an option or if they were swapped out by a previous owner from a special edition car.

Swapped out the left rear caliper, pads and rotor. That was an ordeal. I still have to bleed the brakes but the rest of the work is done. The local Parts Source had rear calipers for both sides a few weeks ago, but they had sent one back, so I couldn't start until they got it in at about 4:15 PM. Much of the work was done with a small reading lamp sine the sun goes down earlier now.

No I did not disconnect it... Foolishly I figured since I was hooking it all up with it disconnected from the car, it would be ok...

Today I went ahead and mailed the auxmod back for a refund and purchased a pioneer single din bluetooth, handsfree calling, usb, aux along with a wire harness and single din bay with storage slot. This will work for me as I have all the features I want, plus a place to keep my new and big Nokia 1520.

I learned my lesson and disconnected the battery before the install of this radio. It was like 20 minutes. Though there is a slight hum coming from the speakers with nothing playing and the radio on... Oh and the fact the antenna rises when I power on the car... I may just replace it or pull the fuse...

Oh and thanks to the few that informed me of the lower prices for the radio... I did a quick search and found prices much higher lastnight. And a special thanks to my friend who offered me one. I might just get that too.

I did notice that not only to I have a hole in my shifting boot, but the "blue thingy" is missing and that is what is making the clicking when I touch the clutch. I will get a penny fix for that :)

Well, I never saw the "blue thingy" in my car, but I remember reading a thread (http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=553682&highlight=blue+thingy) when I was researching and saved it. Some may have found a replacement, others seem to just "glue" a penny or nickel/dime depending on how rich you are, lol. I make a shim or something to slide in. If you get down low, you will easily see what it makes a click when you touch the pedal.

I guess I will be doing that today... Dang... now to find a boot kit and research fixing it...

A busy morning with my 00, I put a plug de-fouler on the O2 sensor in hopes of keeping the 0402 code away for more than 200 miles, then I pulled the passenger door panel and adjusted the window so it operates smoother and I did a little creative shaving on the stops to let the window go up high enough to meet the weather striping to keep the rain out, finally I gave it a bath and no leaks at the passenger side window! Finally reinstalled the interior. Since the fire, I power-washed the trunk twice, flushed it with Tris buffer (neutralizes everything; important for ammonium phosphate extinguisher cleanup), and painted it with Rust Bullet to prevent anything bad from starting. Now, I readded my parcel shelf and carpet (also washed). Since I recently had my clutch replaced, I redid my shifter turret oil before putting the center console back.

Up next: front subframe, motor mounts, and front poly bushings. My parts tab is depressing.

But the differential fill plug was 23mm, and the drain was 24. The comments in the Garage stating a 7/8 would fit did not apply to mine. Luckily I had the sockets I needed.

I snuck my NB into the Masters Miata club's parking while they were visiting Steve Bertok at Panic in Columbia. It's on the far left, the only one with a hardtop on.

And while the wheels have been on for two weeks now, I didn't post about them until now. They're an used set of Konig Heliums in 15x6.5 (perfect for E-Street) from a stanced Miata owner near Rock Hill. Got them for a bargain and the tires are pretty decent with a lot of tread life left on them.

Cool, I will get on that..

Well, yesterday I just gave her a good drive. The new radio is not bad at all and is a pleasure to have... The lemonade from the lemon is good :). I will order this part as well since there is more significance/safety reason.

I mounted the hands free mic around and in front of the dash on the base where the steering wheel column runs under. Surprisingly, the hands free kit sounds good and people can hear me over driving for the most part. Although removing the faceplate is not the best theft deterrent, it is better than nothing. I take the plate with me when I get out and hopefully things will be safe enough... I don't leave anything in the car.

Drove home from East TN after spending two afternoons on the roads around Boone. Total trip yesterday was 345 miles in 8 hours and 15 minutes. Spent 15 minutes on I26 and the rest of the trip was back roads. TN 66 and 63 were interesting from Kingsport to Harrogate TN.
We had a really good run Friday afternoon following the directions for the 'Big Tour'. Started with 13 cars and wet road conditions. After transitioning to the northwestern flank of the mountains the sun came out and the roads dried out. We had a spirited run on Hwy 58 and finished between the peaks of the Snake on US421. Several continued on to Boone while a few of us ran north, then south and then back north on the snake.
The new suspension is working well and opened the true meaning of all the posts I read before the purchase and installation. There were only two occasions when the rear was loose. Both times I may have reached the limit of the tires. All in all the VMaxx Extreme Sports are worth the money. This car now sticks to the road. The ride is also superior to the stock suspension.
Spent a few hours this morning washing and detailing. 4 hard days on the road and 1,329 miles had it looking filthy. The covers go back on this evening and the Miata goes back to living the life of a driveway queen.

I installed windshield washer nozzles on my 2003 project today. The car came without nozzles, one of a myriad of minor details.

Somewhere on the forum, I saw a recommendation to use 1997/2002 Ford Escort nozzles. Direct replacement, nice fan pattern, and cheap ($6 each). Took all of 15 seconds.

The rest of the day was spent clearing garage space for the Miata. It has been four years since I had a four wheel vehicle in the garage. Recently I couldn't even fit my nice Escapade motorcycle trailer inside. Something had to give.

I finished the day with my two motorcycles, my two motorcycle trailers (the other is a Bunkhouse pop up camper), the Miata, and my backlog of bicycle parts (another hobby).

Mission accomplished!

Spent the afternoon replacing the ignition lock on my 2000 LS. It was tedious but accomplished in 2 hours and all work again. The problem was the key was difficult to remove from the lock and all is right now. Now back to driving!

Tested out my newly installed "unbreakable" rain rail, tightened a few nuts a bit that were weeping, and buttoned the carpet back up.

Fixed my soft top latch not locking in place by filing down the stoppers on the release button, as described in the garage article. This allowed me to finally take off the sun visors. Seems like I developed a new rattle in the windshield area though, not sure if that's related...

Made a little jumper wire and disabled the clutch interlock. Bought some Meguire "Quik Detailer" spray, as I slowly learn how impossible it is to keep a black car looking half-way decent, without access to a hose and parked in a complex parking lot.

Black cars... just so hard to keep them looking good...

You aren't kidding! I've never had a car worth the time to keep clean (Two prior Volvo 940's, both with exterior issues a quick clean wouldn't have helped). I relatively recently moved into a townhouse without any way to wash a car except for the local coin-op, it didn't even dawn on me before purchasing my car how much more work a black car entails, and the car is my daily driver. :ohno: Definitely a learning curve I'm riding.

I love black cars!!! But I'll never own another one. You just don't understand how hard they are to keep looking good until you experience it yourself.

Sounds like you need a color like my Miata. Who can even tell if it's dirty?!?!:p

Put in a new thermostat and gasket. Old thermostat was installed with weep hole at 9 o'clock position, should have been at 12 o'clock. And it's clearly not OEM. The spring is smaller, the ID is slightly smaller and the through hole is offset from center.

Replacement thermostat is OEM made in Japan. All around better looking product.
Immediately upon installation and fluid checks I drove in 90F hwy traffic across the bridge to Washington, 4pm 20mi.
Temp norm was 197F - 207F steady ~203F.
Temp on trip 195F - 203F steady ~199F.

Notable increase in time when temp<200F.

ANOTHER SMALL STEP IN THE MASTER PLAN!

Black cars... just so hard to keep them looking good...

and thank goodness for that!

I have fun working on my NB. It's my DD and I wash it every weekend. I can do it in about 15-20 min and the detailing, well let's just say, you just pick a stopping point. You're never really done.

I can't drop $1200 on suspension right now and I really want to. At least washing it let's me scratch that itch a little.

The thing I like about the Miata is that it's so small and can be washed so fast. Also, I now have a wash system that I can do in just a few minutes with no water waste of using a hose... in California, that's important.

I discovered Turtle Wax "Rinse Free Wash & Wax" (https://www.turtlewax.com/rinsefree/) and I'm blown away by how well it works. I keep a 5 gallon covered plastic bucket in the garage with about 2 gallons of the mix and a strainer at the bottom so that I'm not picking up dirt when I dip into it. I also now use a second bucket of clear water to rinse the sponge out each time after wiping it with the mix. I can get about 6 washes out of this one mixture if the cars are only lightly soiled. I use a soft sponge to wash, and two soft microfiber towels to dry. This stuff is sort of like magic, dirt is picked up during the wash and settles in the bottom of the clear water rinse pail when wrung out. When drying the car, there are no streaks left on the finish or glass and I have seen no evidence of any scratching on either car, even when removing bird poop, etc. No one seems to carry this, none of the auto stores or Target, etc. I had to order it online. Often times, in the morning, before going to work I'll just wash off the top surfaces that get really dusty and damp.. it only takes me about 5 minutes.

Here's a good video online (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESJzyfcEcVI)

Just got my shipping notice that my FM parts are in the mail.

Soon the plumbing from breather element to the rear bumper will be swapped out.

Also have new exhaust manifold studs and nuts and new gasket to end the cold whistle once & for all.

Liter dual gauge pod in hand and Speedhut gauges on the way ( oil press & boost / vac )

This fall the car will loose a few days up on a lift 😊

Yep! I have been collecting/restoring/ and reselling vintage steel bikes for many years. I started working on vintage steel bikes when they were NEW, I became "vintage" along with them. I have a Facebook page for my bicycles.

The garage just has overflow bikes and wheels. The rest are in my workshop.

Yesterday I got my roll bar structurally installed and today I worked on the finishing work. This is my first time doing something like this and let's just say it's a good thing that I'm not really attached to my tan interior because it's not looking too good at this point

On the plus side The car feels awesome with the added bracing.

Also got a new ignition module for my Fab9 COP kit in the mail (That they sent for free). Hopefully it'll actually work now.

In regards to the no hose off washing method.

I like the look of that, but I think I'd have to tweak it to a two bucket method.

Wash bucket & rinse bucket.

I just can't trust the placing of dirt back into the 'clean' washing rags.

Perhaps I'd like it better with smaller microfiber towel pieces.

Then they'd be use once and into a 'dirty' bucket. Then grab a fresh clean towel to wash with.

I've gotten a bit paranoid about putting swirl marks into the paint. Since I KNOW I have done that to some of my Miata's in the past.

I bought it new - it got swirled... I had to have done it. I'm the only washer.

My solution has been NO foaming brush at car wash; soap bucket and separate rinse bucket.

I can use soap for months. Only the rinse water gets dirty.

But, I could be more frugal if I used a no rinse system.

Try the two bucket Turtlewax "Rinse free wash and wax" I just mentioned above. No swirl marks now after almost a years worth of washes on three cars.

My NB was getting a little jealous over the attention the new stall mate was getting. Little did she know, a new FM Stage 2 kit just arrived for her, as well as RB end links and Potenza RE-11s.

Suspension being installed Mon-Tues, tires on Wed, then time for a road trip this weekend!

I thought I might be having a problem with the left rear caliper I installed last week, so I bled it (no change) and dialed in the adjuster. You have to watch the adjuster - it can pull right out of the caliper, but I put it back in and adjusted it to contact then backed off a third of a turn and everything seems to be good. I would add "rear caliper" to the list of things that were not designed correctly on the Miata.

Replaced my cigarette lighter socket after yanking it out with my new phone mount. Cool thing has and expanding ring wedge assembly that I forgot about when removing. Used a hair dryer to heat up the plastic and the tabs went in fine with no cracking on any of the plastic. Then disconnected the negative battery terminal that I should have done last winter when I adjusted my A pillar gauges and opened up a huge can of electrical gremlin worms, stressed the harness. ;) I also need a new EGR valve and will try to pick it up tonight.

Couple of days ago I changed the air filter back to the original larger one I had, the gas smell under boost has increased and I'm thinking maybe it isn't getting enough air. Changed oil/filter, swapped out the wheels/tires for the Lightspeeds/Toyos, disconnected the breather line from the valve cover to the supercharger inlet and installed a K&N filter in its place. Also replaced the cruise control vacuum motor and connected it to the 'charger inlet spigot, I'll try it out the next time I drive it.
